„The Bank“ Is Funniest
of Chaplin Comedies
Two Reels of Latest Production Are
Packed With Mirth
The next great Essanay-Chaplin comedy is entitled
The Bank. There is more riotous fun packed into
this two reel comedy than any other photoplay of like length. The world‘s great comedian, Charles Chaplin, has outdone
himself in this new production. While all his other comedies are
funny, this one is a scream. It abounds in real humor, and
comic situations, with Chaplin at his best in his inimitable antics.
Chaplin has instilled new and original ideas into this
production that make it distinctly different from all others,
while carrying out Chaplin‘s naive humor. Chaplin
plays his role with more spontaneity than usual. It is the same
Mr. Chaplin that has been making the world roar with
laughter for the past several months, only with even more
ginger and lively fun. Chaplin is well known for his
extemporaneous action in the taking of scenes. In his play
it appears all to be acted out on the spot without
forethought. This is what gives the play its easy, spontaneous
flow that makes it so delightful to all. Not that Chaplin
does not prepare for his comedies. He studies character for
days and even months to learn just what they do and
how they act under given circumstances. But when he comes
to the taking of the scene, he lets this knowledge trickle
out as the action calls for, so that nothing is forced. The action
hits the bull‘s eye for realism, which Chaplin maintains
is necessary to real humor. A slight exaggeration, perhaps,
but the great comedian holds that to be funny the
action must appeal to the spectator as real. While full of
rollicking fun, this comedy is clean and wholesome
and a comedy that is enjoyed by men, women and children
alike. Chaplin will be seen in The Bank tonight only
at the Orpheum theater.“
