& New Chaplin Comedy Enjoyed at Portola
Charlie Chaplin, in „The Immigrant“ is the attraction
at the Portola Theater this week. Charlie plays
the role of an immigrant, who arrives in America without funds,
and attempts to get a meal for himself and the hungry
Edna in a „hash house.“ His efforts to avoid paying the check
provide Chaplin with opportunities for the sort of
comedy which convulses audiences.

„and at the Portola there is a picture comedy headed
by Charlie Chaplin and Edna Purviance.“ (...)
„Portola
The Immigrant is the latest Charlie Chaplin comedy,
and it will be the attraction for one week at the
Portola theater, beginning today. It is claimed for this picture
production that it took more time to ,stage‘ than
any comedy in which the celebrated comedy star has ever
appeared.
The story of The Immigrant involves the hero, Charlie
Chaplin, in adventures on an ocean liner which
is bringing ,the immigrant‘ and scores of others to this land
of the free and home of the brave. The hero begins
to seek adventures as soon as he boards the big boat.
The feminine star of the pictured story is Edna
Purviance, who plays the role of a smiling star from
abroad.“ (...)
