Mit 18 Jahren kam er nach New York, von wo er mit einer
Truppe deutscher Schauspieler nach Chicago ging;
nach dem Zusammenbruch dieser Truppe startete er eine Schau
in einem Biergarten, mit der er Erfolg hatte und Geld
verdiente. 1889 eröffnete er sein erstes Theater, die Orpheum
Concert Hall, die das erste einer mehr als sechzig
Häuser umfassenden Variététheater-Kette wurde. Hier trat
Charlie Chaplin zum ersten Mal in Amerika auf
und begann Buster Keaton seine Bühnenlaufbahn. (...)
Als die Orpheum-Kette mit Keith-Albee-Orpheum
und Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) zusammengelegt wurde,
zog sich Beck zurück.

Gus Edwards‘ „Song Revue“ is the biggest and best thing
on the Orpheum bill this week. (...)
Will H. Macart, the comedian, and Ethlynne Bradford
appear in a laughable comedy sketch, „A Legitimate
Hold Up,“ and there is a lot to laugh at in Fred Karno‘s latest
skit, „The Wow Wows,“ which tells about the initiation
of a new member in a London secret society. This is in three
scences, the last showing the chamber of horrors,
with the Wow Wows lined up in cloaks and masks, while
the victim is put through the mysteries of the order.
