& Censors are not a recent thing. They have always been active.

Back in 1914, in the July 19 issue of the Chicago Tribune

some deletions from films were published. A few were:

Mabel‘s Married Life – all scenes showing girl in pajamas

before men other than her husband and all scenes

where she is with husband and falls with him to the floor

shall be cut out.

(...) International Photographer, L. A., May 1937

& A novel addition was made to the regular

bill this week in the inauguration of a serial descriptive lecture

by Walter Murray. (...) Other pictures on the bill

included a Chaplin film labelled Caught in the Rain, that came remarkably close to the danger line, although

it bore the the endorsement of the National Censor Board

(which may or may not mean much).

(...) John J. (Wynn) O‘Connor, Variety, May 14, 1915,

about the bill of the Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York

& Here‘s a new Charlie Chaplin!

(...) J. B. Hirsch, Motion Picture, Jan. 1916

& Mabel‘s Married Life (Keystone),

June 20. – It is surely a winner, It can‘t be described; but there

is nothing at all offensive in it; it is all laughable, and

a very desirable release. Charles Chapman“ Chaplin. „and

Mabel Normand are at their best and everyone knows

what that means; better than most feature offerings from

an exhibition viewpoint. This kind makes ‘em come

again soon.

(...) Moving Picture World, July 4, 1914

& „Mabel‘s Married Life“ (Keystone,

Sat., June 20.) – The best part of this comedy is that in which

Charles Chaplain, as the drunken husband, has a fight

with the dummy which is placed in the door by his wife, Mabel.

Although this is the best part, the rest of the picture

is far above the average comedy. All will be aching from

laughter when it is over.
