Mr. Charles Chaplin as „The Fireman,“ Lone Star-Mutual,
began contributing anew to the cause of mirth
yesterday in various points of the loop. As a whole this
is a very funny film, excelling „The Floorwalker“
in that quality. There is more of soup spilling and of Keystone
kicking than is necessary for successful slapsticking,
but there is is also a certain novelty of situation and a humor
in its expression that moves to much mirth.
Charlie Chaplin is a true comedian who doesn‘t need
to resort to the conflict of the physical to make fun.
He has a sufficiently mobile expression to do that. The best
spot in the whole film, though the gradual disintegration
of the fire engine he was driving is funny, was when he looked
around and perceived that the engine was missing and
was driving nothing but the seat.
Miss Purviance again doesn‘t have so much chance
as a capable, leading lady of her caliber deserves.
Everybody else has to work hard and does so amidst much
chaos soup, water and smoke.
