„Charles J. Stine, the creator of many roles at the
Essanay Film company, spoke of going to a picture
theatre with Charlie Chaplin when the latter was in Chicago.
,We were watching the screen,‘ said Mr. Stine.
,It was a western picture. The heroine was a cashier in a
general store. A stage coach had just been held up,
and the villain appeared to rob the store. Just as he was
struggling with the girl, her lover rushed forward. He picked
up a chair and struck at the robber. With the chair
held fully a yard away from the bad man, we were surprised
to see him fall to the ground. He didn‘t come within
a yard of being hit. There was a silence of perhaps a minute,
then the audience, appreciating the humor of the
situation, started to laugh, and the room was filled with their
laughter.
,I don‘t see,‘ finished Mr. Stine, ,how any director could
afford to let such a picture go out. It‘s a well known
company, too; one of the biggest – but then I guess I had
better not tell.‘“
