& First Mutual-Chaplin Releases
THE first of the Mutual-Chaplin comedies, „The Floorwalker,“
is practically complete and will be released on May 15.
According to advance information this film shows the famous
comedian at his best and contains of number of novel
stunts heretofore never attempted by Charley. Many of the
incidents are woven around an escalator and while
these were being filmed Chaplin came near having a very serious
accident, and was only saved by the famous Chaplin
shoes. While rushing up the moving stairway Charley tripped
and nearly lost his balance and his foot was caught
between the first and second steps. But fortunately the shoe was
several inches longer than his foot so that the steps
closed only on the shoe and not on his foot and resulted only
in a badly torn shoe.

& Charles Chaplin will appear as a floorwalker in the first film
made under his contract with the Mutual. Vincent Bryan
wrote the scenario, or at least furnished the idea, since the
comedian is his own director and evolves most
of the business in his pictures. An escalator was installed
in the studio for some of the scenes and the joy
of Chaplin when he discovered the possibilities for comedy in the moving staircase was unbounded. „The Floorwalker“
will be released May 15. Seventy-five prints will be needed
to cover the bookings in New York alone.

officials and the trade press. Chaplin has started
