& „Fired“ by Charlie Chaplin.
NOW a partner with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks
in the United Artists‘ Corporation, Gloria Swanson was „fired“ once
by Charlie Chaplin.
The „firing“ occurred back in the days when the two famous
stars were just beginning their picture careers.
„The old Essanay Co. was producing pictures in Chicago,
where I lived,“ Miss Swanson relates. „The comparatively
new art fascinated me. Finally, I went with my aunt, who knew
some one at the studio, and there met the casting director.
He told me that some day when he was putting on a mob scene
he would send for me.
„This did not satisfy me, however. Even when I was given
a small part with Charlie Chaplin, who at that time was
making one-reel comedies for the Essanay, I was not aware
of the honor being paid me, for I wanted to play a great
dramatic part.
„As it turned out, I need not have worried. After only
one day‘s work, I was taken out as not being good enough to
support the illustrious funmaker.“
After this, Gloria played in comedies several years,
but finally was given a serious role by the old Triangle Co.
in California. Not long after, she was starred.
