CHAPLIN MAKES IT ACT, TOO, IN
LATEST FUN FEATURE.
By Grace Kingsley.
The very funniest made-to-order souse in the world –
if you like souses – I mean other persons – is
Charlie Chaplin‘s , which is on view at the Garrick this week,
under the suggestive title of One A. M., Chaplin
being the only actor in the picture. The screen comedian
has the magic power, as everybody knows, of
turning everything he touches into the gold of laughter.
So that in One A. M. it is Chaplin as the star with
the furniture as supporting company.
The taxis speedometer is a veritable burlesque artist;
the revolving table is a comedian of rare gift;
the wild-animal skins which decorate the floor are as amusing
as Sally and Napoleon, even the poor old syphon
bottle is a funster with finesse, and the trick bed is a clown.
Besides, Chaplin has invented all the ways there
are of not getting upstairs. Finally, in this film, he ties himself
in the manner of the mountaineer, takes an alpenstock
and hacks little steps in the stairway with the ice-pick.“ (...)

One A. M. is
