„The pair, at Charlie‘s peninsula residence“

Editorial content. „Like Mary‘s Little Lamb –

      PAULETTE FOLLOWS CHARLIE

„,Well, I‘m here Charlie,‘ must have been the laconic

response to Charlie Chaplin‘s raised eyebrows when

Paulette Goddard, the maybe-she-is-maybe-she-isn‘t wife

of the film comedian, dropped in at Pebble Beach

for a visit with the man who is suspicioned to be her husband.

The pair, at Charlie‘s peninsula residence, were pleasant

to news reporters, but refused to say anything concerning their

marital status.“

      Screen Couple At Pebble Beach;

      ,No Talk‘

DEL MONTE – (UP) – Paulette Goddard, who left

Hollywood Monday for a showdown at Pebble

Beach with Charlie Chaplin before flying to Reno to ,start a ski

club,‘ was located here Wednesday in Chaplin‘s

company.

   Miss Goddard, the maybe-she-is-maybe-she-isn‘t wife

of Charlie, was smiling and apparently in good

spirits. She announced pleasantly she intended to spend

the Fourth of July holidays at the comedian‘s

hideaway at Pebble Beach.

      NO FIREWORKS

Her meeting with Chaplin was devoid of any marital

fireworks such as friends expected when the

dark-eyed actress hurried out of Hollywood announcing

she intended to talk over ,many things‘ with her

husband – if he is – and then go to Reno if ,things didn‘t

work out right.‘

Miss Goddard arrived here Tuesday night but her

presence was not disclosed until Wednesday.

      POLITE, BUT FIRM

Aside from pleasantries, both Chaplin and Miss Goddard

refused to issue any statements. Servants in the

Chaplin home were instructed to deny that Miss Goddard

was visiting at his Pebble Beach home.

A source close to Chaplin said, however, Miss Goddard

plans to leave for Reno early next week – to ,start

a ski club,‘ as Miss Goddard insists – and then go east

to take part in an amateur stage play.

Miss Goddard had made a reservation for plane passage

from San Francisco to Reno last Monday night. The

reservation, however, was cancelled by a telephone call

from a San Francisco hotel.“
