& In the newly anti-Semitic Italy an informal
censorship on racial grounds would be the result of the boycott
recommended (according to „Time“) by „Il Tevere“
against films showing Charlie Chaplin, the Ritz Brothers,
and the Marx Brothers. Their humour, says the
paper, is „non-Aryan,“ and, it adds, „the Marx Brothers are only
a big bluff.“ There may be more than racial theory in the
recommended boycott, for Marxian humour is not over-gentle
either with Italians or with dictatorships – Chico‘s accent,
the „transatlantic“ airmen of „A Night at the Opera,“ and the
dictatorial war-making antics of „Duck Soup“ may all
have found chinks in the armour of Fascist complacency. And
it is rumored that Chaplin is to follow the radical „Modern
Times“ with a film in which he will double the parts of a jewish
paper-hanger who is mistaken for a dictator and of the
dictator himself. Apart from the moustache, Herr Hitler, his
enemies say, was once a paper-hanger.

& Charlie Chaplin has discarded his idea
of portraying Hitler on the screen or at least that of a jew who
looked like him and the character as developed by
Chaplin was a study in pomposity. The expected censorship
and antagonism led the famous comedian to forsake
the idea although he had been working on it for months.

THE WASHINGTON MERRY-GO-ROUND
By Drew Pearson and Robert S. Allen
Hollywood, Cal. – Charlie Chaplin has decided that the
only way to kill dictatorship is thru ridicule. Accordingly,
he is going back to the screen to produce a photographic
satire of Hitler and Mussolini.
If the film comes up to all that Hollywood hears
about it, these two gentlemen will be sputtering all over
the two continents.“ (...)
„,This film,‘ says Charlie Chaplin, ,is the only thing
sufficient to shake off my lethargy and make me go to work

Foreign Censorship.
Chief speculation in Hollywood is whether Neville
Chamberlain will permit Chaplin‘s dictator film to be shown
in Great Britain. Charlie thinks not.
,Chamberlain is too friendly with Hitler,‘ he says.
,I am counting the British market completely out, also
the French.‘“ (...)
„Charlie Chaplin, wealthy, independent, sincere
crusader for democracy, is willing to take the loss. The big
companies are not.“ (...)
