FILM MOUSTACHE CRISIS

      Trouble arises concerning the reported new film

in which Chaplin is to appear as a dictator. Herr

Hitler alleges plagiarism and threatens to produce a film

himself and to appear in it as Chaplin. Chaplin

holds that he had the moustache first, claims copyright

and demands royalties from all sales of „MEIN

KAMPF“ to date.

& There was welcome news today from Charlie Chaplin‘s

office . . . . He made a statement in Hollywood

in which he said: „I wish to state that I have never wavered

from my original intention to make this picture

(,The Dictator‘). I am not worried about intimidation,

censorship or anything else. I am making

a comedy picture on the lives of dictators which I hope will

create much healthy laughter throughout the world.“

. . . Your correspondent, who was in Hollywood when Chaplin

decided to make the picture, knows that much

pressure from high places was brought to bear on Chaplin

to drop the project.

abandoning his picture based on dictators.
