& IN CHARLIE CHAPLIN‘S picture, „The Dictator,“ Paulette
Goddard will play scrub girl and will conceal her chic
under a cheap high-necked dress. Chaplin is said to be set
on her playing the role without a bit of make-up;
in fact, he has offered her a bonus if she will comply with his
wishes. Miss Goddard – generally believed to be
Mrs. Chaplin – uses no make-up on the street except lipstick,
and when she made her big test for the role of Scarlett
in „Gone With the Wind“ – and which she didn‘t get, Director
George Cukor made her wash her face with soap
and water. While screen make-up covers up many defects
and wrinkles, it also detracts something from
youthfulness and freshness.

a brunette, that you looked much better to him
as nature had intended. What would you do? Go on being
a blonde because you didn‘t want to spoil him
by surrender?
Paulette Goddard had that happen to her. She went
blonde and Mr. Chaplin went critical. She returned to her natural coloring. And I agree with Chaplin.
I like her better that way.“ (...)
