& Chaplin Soon to Release
His Film About Dictators
Charlie Chaplin has issued the following statement with
regard to his new motion picture about dictators:
„The report that I may withdraw my film is entirely
without foundation. I am cutting it now and as
soon as it is synchronized it will be released. More than ever
now the world needs to laugh. At a time like this
laughter is a safety valve four our sanity.“

„In final stages of scoring and editing“
Editorial content. „Wanger and Chaplin‘s Film Changes
to Keep Abreast of History
Hollywood, May 21.
Reflection of Europe‘s ,total war‘ fell in full force yesterday
(Monday) on two United Artists producers. While Walter
Wanger added $260,000 to the budget of Foreign Correspondent,
to include scenes of the invasion of Holland and Belgium,
Charles Chaplin called a momentary halt on his forthcoming
feature while he re-surveyed the situation.
After pulling in the reins completely yesterday,
Chaplin resumed cutting this (Tues.) afternoon. Pic tentatively
titled The Dictator or Production No. 6, is in final stages
of scoring and editing. Chaplin‘s halt to appraise the situation
was due to fear that his facetious treatment of Hitler
may hit the wrong public chord in light of present events.
It is understood that some changes along this line
are contemplated unless the tide of war turns.
At any rate, a spokesman for the comedian-producer
said Chaplin hopes to have the picture ready
for September release. (UA chief Murray Silverstone,
in a statement in New York yesterday (Tues.)
likewise declared he hoped the $1,500,000 film, a top attraction
on the UA sales program, will be ready for September.)“
The Great Dictator world premiere is in New York Oct. 15, 1940
at the Capitol and Astor Theatres.
Capitol Theatre, 1645 Broadway (at 51st Street), New York.
Astor Theatre, 1531 Broadway (at 45th Street), New York.
