& Photographs Snapped at Vise Despite Orders of Germans
These photographs, which have just come in this
country from Belgium, were taken at great risk by English
photographers. The order had gone out only the
day before these pictures were taken that no photographs should
be made behind the German lines during the remainder
of the war. The upper photo shows one of the principal streets
of the Belgian city of Vise after the bombardment by the
Germans. No more significant photograph has yet come from
the war zone. The photograph below shows the bridge
across the Meuse river at Vise, which was blown up by the
Belgians to hamper the German forces in their advance.
It was here that the Germans lost thousands of men, who fell
under the heavy fire from the forts of Liege. The men
in the foreground of the picture are German soldiers. Although
the camera was pointed almost directly at them they
did not notice it.
