Behind the Screen Scenes

„Incomparable Rialto Orchestra“

Editorial content. „Right off the Reel

Charles the Hero of a Vers Libre Review

„BEHIND THE SCREEN“

Produced by Mutual.

Directed by Mr. Chaplin Himself.

The Cast:

A Stage Hand ......................................... Charlie Chaplin

A Stage-Struck Country Girl ................... Edna Purviance

The Head Carpenter ............................... Eric Campbell

BY MAE TINEE.

      IN this picture, which is

The egular Chaplin monthly release

Of the Mutual company, we have

Mr. Charles Chaplin,

Who is, as usual,

THE WHOLE THING. He is

Accompanied by his usual staff of

Pie Throwing,

Ladder Upsetting

Acrobats

And Miss Edna

Purviance, who is

Some Acrobat Her-

Self when Occasion

Demands.

This time you

Find them

Exceedingly busy busy,

Behind the Screen

Or, in Other Words,

In a Motion Picture

Studio, endeavoring

To show you

How Pictures are

Made, and may

Heaven Help Us

If this is the way,

In confidence, it may be said that,

Judging from some

Productions, it is the way.

Charlie of this Picture is

Not an Actor.

He is

Assistant to the stage manager, a

Large, Lazy Giant, who

Sleeps, eats, and has his Being,

His Long Suit, the faculty of

Letting Charles do it –

All of it – meaning

All of the Work.

And Charles does Considerable, as

You have Probably conjectures.

Though he evidently struggles

To do his Best,

DESTRUCTION

Follows in his WAKE, and many

Wish indeed,

Well, along comes

Edna Purviance, who would

A Actress be. BUT the

Stage Hands having

STRUCK,

All she can get is a job as

CARPENTER. She having donned

Overalls and a cap during an INTERIM

(If you know what that means).

She is DISCOVERED by CHARLES,

Who takes MOMENTS off occasionally

To Kiss them SMILING LIPS, and

When it is

ALL OVER, the dynamite

Administered by

THE STRIKERS having

WORKED, he is still

KISSING them SMILING LIPS,

Which is as it

SHOULD BE.

(Which, being the first review I ever tried to do in vers

libre, and probably the last I ever get a chnce to do,

as it isn‘t vers libre. I must say I myself think it is quite punk,

but if it conveys the impression that Mr. Chaplin in

this release is quite as funny as ever it has at least made

its meaning clear. I thank you.)

      Them Smiling Lips

      Two photos.
