1910s, Water and Power

& The film and stage folk gave a benefit last Sunday

evening at the Mason Opera house when

about $2,000 were raised for Los Angeles Newsboys.

In the audience were many of the most

prominent people of the city and contrary to the usual custom,

the highest-price seats were in greatest demand. (...)

Among the stars who acted as magnets for the elusive

„big iron men“ were such distinguished players

as Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (...) and Charlie Chaplin.

& CHARLES CHAPLIN IN A

      BURLESQUE ON „CARMEN.“

Charles Chaplin has nearly completed another

Essanay-Chaplin comedy and it will be

released shortly. The title is „Charlie Chaplin‘s Burlesque

on Carmen,“ in two acts.

Again Chaplin is found in an entirely new role.

There is less of the slap stick variety of fun

and more of the subtle points of genuine humor.

Mr. Chaplin apparently is able to put

over something new in almost every production. You look

for him as he appeared last and you find that

his make-up has disappeared and a new one donned.

But it is the same Chaplin underneath, you find

the same personality that has made him beloved all

over the world.

„This is Charlie Chaplin‘s last Essanay subject“

Editorial content. „CHAPLIN‘S PLANS STILL UNKNOWN

      Special to Motion Picture News

                                                                  Los Angeles, Dec. 24.

Members of the Essanay-Chaplin company have recovered

from the effects of making the fight scene in the tavern

for the burlesque on Carmen, and are now able to return to work

and make the last few remaining scenes.

The producing organization will have this finished, and the

subject will be shipped by the latter part of the week.

This is Charlie Chaplin‘s last Essanay subject under the

contract made last year and no announcement could

be secured from the studio staff as to the future with regard

to this comedian and the company.“
