& Charley Chaplin in Carmen.

Noted comedian in burlesque of famous opera coming

to Nashville. Charley Chaplin announces an early

release pf his burlesque on „Carmen.“ The famous comedian

plays the part of Don Jose. The very idea of Charley

in the leading role is enough to convulse an audience. It was

three days before the company finished the fight

scene in the tavern – two and a half of said days being spent

in the hospital.

Several weeks were spent in study before the story

was put in scenario.

„I have had in mind the burlesquing of Carmen for a long

time,“ said Chaplin. „It lends itself very readily

to burlesque because of the depth of feeling it portrays

and the solemnity with which the emotion of love

is presented.

„In our situations, Miss Purviance and myself acted

the part with such solemnity that it threw

out the force of gravity and made the play funny.“

The release date of this Chaplin comedy

will be announced by the Crescent Amusement company

shortly.

„After seeing the big feature productions from that famous opera“

Editorial content. „Essanay announces early release

of Chaplin‘s Carmen picture.

Although this picture has been made for some time,

the expectant public has been unable to learn

the release date. The Essanay announces that Charley

Chaplin‘s latest picture will be shown to the public

within the next few days.

A burlesque on a famous opera or drama is an innovation

in the film world. Chaplin decided to produce a burlesque

on Carmen after seeing the big feature productions from that

famous opera. The tense moments in the serious

situations afford side-splitting scenes when Chaplin transferred

them to his burlesque. In some of the love scenes

he and Miss Purviance merely appeared more solemn than

ever, which action created some of the funniest

moments in the play.

Chaplin takes the role of Don Jose, and it is a mighty duel

he fights with his fellow officer in the tavern; reports

from the west coast intimate that several days were lost after

the tavern scene owing to the majority of the company

being laid up in the hospital for repairs.

      Anyway, whether reports are exaggerated

or not, it will be an expectant public until

the famous Chaplin-Carmen picture makes its appearance.“
