Chaplin at Karno´s, USA/Canada Clippings 158/286

Winnipeg Tribune, Winnipeg, Canada, November 25, 1912.

Empress (Dominion) Theatre, exterior by day, Winnipeg, undated,

& AT THE EMPRESS NEXT WEEK.

Scene I. – The nook on the Thames – River life with

its beauty and gaiety. – „Prepare.“

Scene II. – Entrance to secret society chamber of horrors –

The sign and password – „Kiss me tonight, nurse“ –

„Take care!“

Scene III. – Interior of chamber of horrors – The initiation –

Archibald on the magic carpet – „Beware!“

Next week is Karno week at the Empress. These eight

words are sufficient to cause an unprecedented rush

to the box office. In fact, to let the public into a little secret,

whenever records are being compared at the Empress,

one will hear an expression something like this: „It‘s the biggest

week in twelve months – except, of course. ,Karno

Week.‘“ Well, Karno week has come again, with the same big

company and the irrepressible Charles Chaplin,

the most polished vaudeville „drunk“ on the vaudeville stage,

and the man who can, without uttering more than

half a dozen words et each performance, make two million

people „laugh their heads off“ annually. Whether

Chaplin has any lines to speak in „The Wow Wows,“ which

is the name of the playlet in which he now appears,

isn‘t stipulated in the advance accounts, but it is safe to assume

that he will be as big a drawing card as ever, and that

those who don‘t get their seats reserved in advance will likely

bump against the „Standing room only“ sign.

Winnipeggers have seen Fred Karno‘s excellent company

of fifteen players in „A Night in an English Music

Hall“ and „A Night in a London Club,“ and they will now

be given perhaps a bigger treat in „The Wow

Wows,“ or, to give it another name, „A Night in an English

Secret Society.“ Charles Chaplin, of course, is the

individual who has to ride the goat, and as „Archibald,“

he encounters some wonderful things in the

chamber of horrors. But the victim is first allowed to enjoy

life with all of its charms, beauty and gaiety. He is

then led into the chamber of horrors, and, when the password

is given, he receives a hundred thrills and is

initiated into a hundred weird mysteries, finally coming

to the magic carpet. This is electrified, and its

victim is hurled into all sorts of contortions which are

screamingly funny. Like all Karno acts, the fun

is fast and furious from the rise to the fall of the curtain.
