,Yankee‘ Fans Split Sides With Laughter
,I have had many funny and humorous experiences with
European acts and actors,‘ said Chris Brown, general
booking manager for the Sullivan & Considine circuit, recently,
,but I think that the one that amused me the most
was when I took several of the English members of the Karno
London Comedy company to see the New York
Giants play baseball with the Philadelphia team one day
last summer.
;The season having just opened, I thought it would
be a treat for them to see a big league game.
I did not realize what was in store for me, or I would have
turned back at the gate. As soon as we were seated
one of the Britishers said: ;I say, where are the wickets?‘
I explained that we were witnessing baseball,
not cricket. With much pains and in a deliberate manner
I described the game to the best of my ability,
and in words of one syllable.
,Mathewson swatted the ball early in the game,
and was neatly put out at first. Charles Chaplin
(who is always a booster) yelled: ,Well played, sir!‘ Laugh?
I thought the crowd would burst its collective sides.“ (...)
