„Let‘s take the roof off“

Editorial content. „Chaplin Nets $375,000 in Nashville.

When Charlie Chaplin came to Nashville in the

interest of Liberty Bonds he made good. He was treated royally

from the time he stepped from the train until he made

his speech at the spacious Ryman Auditorium, which was packed

to its 5,000 capacity, and hundreds turned away.

The total sum of bonds sold by Charlie was $35,000 –

quite a neat sum for an hour‘s work. Charlie made a rousing talk, concise and to the point. He pulled his famous walk

and hat tipping stunts, much to the delight of the crowds.

In opening his address Charlie said, ,Come on, boys,

get busy. Let‘s take the roof off. We don‘t own it!‘ And they

almost did.“

Ryman Auditorium, 116 5th Avenue North, Nashville.
