„Shoulder Arms,“ in the three reels, will, of necessity, be
comedy fast and furious in view of its condensation
from a negative footage equivalent to six reels. It is said that
the situation offered in the story – a plot based
on trench life and the humorous phases of soldiery both on
active duty and off – afford the greatest single
gathering of possibilities for the utmost in Chaplin comedy
portrayal that he has ever found in any one subject.

First National Exhibitors‘ Circuit Directors Decide on Length
of New Chaplin Comedy
The First National Exhibitors‘ Circuit has decided to release
the new Chaplin picture, Shoulder Arms, in three reels.
Advices at various intervals from the Coast indicated that Chaplin
had enough material in his new picture to make a splendid
six-reel comedy.
A short time ago, however, the First National sent
a questionnaire to the 4,000 exhibitors that have contracted
for the Chaplin comedies asking what length best suit
their needs. Eighty-seven per cent, of the exhibitors voted
for a three-reel comedy.“ (...)
