Editorial content. „CHARLES CHAPLIN AND
TOLSTOY.
THE PERFECT ARTIST AND ,THE KID‘
Of the many things that Tolstoy found to say about art,
one at least stands out very clear and very distinct
– the observation that ,good art always pleases everyone.‘“ (...)
„Tolstoy, we feel, has been quite exceptionally
and amazingly wrong even for a man of genius taken
in an off-moment.“ (...) „But Mr. Charlie Chaplin
is the excuse and on his unassuming head must be the
consequences.
For Mr. Chaplin is an artist in the Tolstoyian sense.“ (...)
„But there is one thing more. The wheel becomes
full circle when Mr. Chaplin reads into the Tolstoyian saying
that subtle art can be understanded of the people.
Mr. Chaplin can be broad – the punch and the kick and the
slap in the face, given or received, are among the
most formidable weapons of his armory – but whoever would
deny that he can be subtle as well should be referred
to passages in The Kid, a picaresque romance, of his own
conception. now on view at half-a-dozen pictures
theatres in the centre of London.“ (...) „H. G.“
