Sad Story Of The Man Who Came For A Rest.

Southampton, Saturday.
,The Mayor is waiting.‘ We all heard the whispered
message, and Mr. Chaplin seized his black bowler hat and his
crook-handled walking-stick and made for the door.
He had been holding a reception in his stateroom on the
Olympic, a jolly, informal reception. He waited for
no introductions. Seeing a face in the doorway he cheerily
called ,Come right in,‘ and greeted the stranger with
as hearty a handshake as the known friend.
I stood aside and watched his easy way. He did not pose.
He was delightfully natural and free. Strangers betrayed
by their hesitancy a doubt as to whether this dapper little man
of simple manner were really the man they had come
to see. ,Mr. Chaplin‘ was so unlike the picture of ,Charlie
Chaplin‘ photographed in the memory. Frankly,
I should not have recognized him. The absence of moustache
and make-up effect such a difference.“ (...)
