& CHAPLINS IN WAR TO HILT; BOTH

      MAD OVER COIN DIVVY.

Los Angeles, March 23. – „On account of my reputation,

which I have spent eighteen years in building,

I am compelled to refuse Mrs. Chaplin‘s statement as to

non-support,“ Charles Chaplin, moving picture

comedian, declared in a statement issued through his

attorney here today.

„I have over $50,000 of cancelled checks which

have been paid out during our short married life in her behalf,“

Chaplin‘s statement continued.

„And this has been spent in addition of her own salary,

which is $1,000 a week. Until this outbreak of hers,

I have not refused the payment of one solitary request or bill

which she has presented to me.“

When shown Chaplin‘s statement, Mrs. Chaplin said:

„I did not intend to press any charges of

non-support, but to base my divorce case on Chaplin‘s

desertion and his cruelty. But I shall do so now,

and I will state in detail just how far he has failed to provide

for me.“
