& The Broadway contingent of the Alexandra Rug Boys are

now waiting patiently to hear of Louis B. Mayer being

run into by a Ford and bumped by a lengthy longshoreman.

Mayer and Charles Chaplin hooked up in the

Alexandria one night last week over the settlement that

is to be made on Mrs. Charles Chaplin, now that

it is certain the comedian and his wife are to part forevermore.

Chaplin invited Mayer to remove his glasses, and

Mayer did this and at the same time shot a right to Chaplin‘s

jaw, sending the comic down for the count. The

following day Chaplin referred all who inquired as to the row

to his wife‘s manager.

Speculation is rife in Los Angeles regarding the follow

up of the fistic encounter between Louis B. Mayer

and Charles Chaplin. According to report, Chaplin requested

Mayer to take off his glasses, which Mayer complied

with, and in the mix-up Mayer, who weighs in the neighborhood

of 200 pounds, necessarily had the better of it. The

reason for Chaplin‘s request is said to be the aftermath

of a press story which Bennie Zeidmann, who is

Mayer‘s publicity man, has been sending out following

the death of Chaplin‘s child. It declared Mrs.

Chaplin (Mildred Harris) would adopt another baby.

Los Angeles. – Charlie Chaplin, moving picture comedian,

and Louis Mayer, film producer and manager

of Chaplin‘s wife, Mildred Harris Chaplin, from whom the

comedian is estranged, engaged in a fist fight

in the lobby of the Hotel Alexandria here. Mayer declared

the fight was caused by efforts on Chaplin‘s part

to make a settlement with his wife, which she is said to have

regarded as inadequate. According to witnesses,

Chaplin met Mayer in the lobby of the hotel and demanded

that he remove his glasses. Chaplin than swung

for Mayer‘s jaw, but missed. Several blows were exchanged

and Chaplin fell to the floor. Chaplin‘s nose showed

several deep scratches after the melee. When asked for

a statement, Chaplin replied: „Ask Mayer and

my wife; they can tell you.‘“
