The Kid Scenes
& Chaplin Talks
Dispatches from Salt Lake City yesterday morning quote
Charlie Chaplin as saying, in connection with his
divorce proceedings, that his wife, Mildred Harris Chaplin,
is seeking an order restraining the sale of a picture
on which he worked for two years and which cost him $300,000.
The dispatches add that Chaplin went to Salt
Lake City because of a law in Utah which prevent serving the
restraining order and that he expects to remain there
until he sells the picture.
Mrs Chaplin had gone to New Rochelle where she
was the guest of honor of the city and Marcus
Loew last night and so could not be reached for a statement.
First National, who still has Chaplin under contract,
was asked yesterday whether any information could be had
regarding the production Chaplin refers to, but it was
said nothing was known of the matter.
Nathan Burkan, Chaplin‘s attorney, is due in New York
a week from Wednesday. He is coming back on the
Olympic. In the absence nothing could be learned of the matter
at the attorney‘s office.

„A serious character“
Editorial content. „Charlie Forsakes Reel
For Real Comedy Work
Charlie Chaplin, he of the funny feet and exquisitely
fitting pants has been taking part in a real comedy
in Salt Lake City this week. His wife‘s attorneys have been
making strenuous efforts to serve papers on him
in connection with her divorce proceedings. Charlie fled
from Los Angeles, Cala., to Salt Lake City, and
successfully dodged the process servers and a continuance
of the case was made necessary.
Chaplin is in the middle of work on his new picture,
The Kid, and will finish the production in Salt Lake
City, he announced Wednesday morning. The photographing
of the piece seems to be all done, but subtitles and
,cutting‘ are yet to be taken care of. Charlie is in a hurry
to get the work marketed before the trial of the divorce
case, which latter he blames on ,the lawyers,‘ who
he says have invested a case of incompatibility between
himself and Mildred Harris Chaplin with a feature
of trying to ,stick‘ him for an exaggerated amount of the
proceeds from his work.
In real life Chaplin seems to impress as a serious
character, with ambitions to show audiences something different
than the pie throwing stunts, and the new picture is cut
out with this purpose in view.“
