„When the picture arrives here it will be distributed“
Editorial content. „Chaplin Spurns Wife‘s Peace Parley Offer
Threat to Tie Up Property and Charges of Radicalism
So Anger Actor That He Declares for Battle
No Red, Asserts Comedian
He Must Come Across or Shoulder Arms, Says Attorney
for His Wife
Not to be outdone by Mrs. Mildred Harris Chaplin, his wife,
Charlie Chaplin yesterday also changed his mind.“ (...)
„Mr. Burkan, in whose office, at 1451 Broadway, the contemplated peace parley was to take place, declared that Mr. Chaplin
was particularly anxious to deny his wife‘s charges that he was
a Bolshevik. While he regarded the entire matter as a joke,
he wanted the world to know that he was not a radical and was
certainly not in favor of the Bolshevik ideas of dividing
one‘s property.
,The Bolsheviki, you know,‘ remarked Charlie, ,believe
in dividing all their property. Well, I don‘t intend to
divide my property with anybody and I want the whole
world to know it. You can see from this that I am
a high-handed capitalist rather than a Bolshevik.‘“ (...)
„Mr. Burkan added that Mr. Chaplin has decided
to make New York his permanent workshop and playground.
At the present time he is having a little vacation, going
the rounds of all the theaters and roofs and having a good
time generally.
,As to that 50 per cent claim which Mrs. Chaplin
makes on her husband‘s property, that‘s all bunk,‘
said Mr. Burkan.“ (...)
,The notice said to have been served by Mr. Goldsmith
on the First National Exhibitors in an effort to prevent
the distribution of Mr. Chaplin‘s forthcoming film means nothing.
When the picture arrives here it will be distributed, despite
Mrs. Chaplin‘s claims of a half interest in it.“ (...)
