The Pawnshop Clippings 28/99

Oakland Tribune, Oakland, California, October 2, 1916.

The New Broadway Theatre In Calif. Has Some

Showmen (...) The Broadway is owned and operated

by Ralph M. Ford, whom we learn is pretty

popular in the show circle of Oakland for his work. (...)

The portrait of a night scene of the Oakland

all lit up can not do the scene justice. The glaring lights fairly

dazzle with their brilliance. We‘d like to point out

the mammoth clock, atop the Broadway sign, which may be

seen in the background. This clock has commanded

plenty of attention from the residents of the city. It is a certain

thing that when they look at the clock they are going

to look at the sign plugging the current attraction at the theatre.

„In fact, the big Sunday attendance just screamed

with laughter all the way through“

      At Broadway.

The ,Pawnship,‘ that opened at the Broadway yesterday

with the return of Chaplin in his original makeup,

and the trademark that made him famous, is a scream

of hilarious laughter from start to finish.

Charlie‘s idea of handling other people‘s timepieces

and the treatment that he gives them, are offered

as a particular worth laugh-getter.

He is funny all the way through, with a thrill or two

introduced along the way, and of course Charlie

always comes out the victor in every battle and there are some

real rough and tumble skirmishes, and when you think

that there is only two reels of it you will admit that he is brim

full of action and side splitting situations all the way

through; in fact, the big Sunday attendance just screamed with

laughter all the way through, and there is no doubt

that it is the best laugh-producer that has been turned over

by Mutual.

The Pawnshop has considerable of plot, but not enough

of the dramatic to get into the way of Mr. Chaplin‘s

irresistible comedy. The story scenario and direction is, of course,

all by Mr. Chaplin. Decidedly costly sets and accessories

were used at the studios in the production of The Pawnshop.

Preview reviewers call it ,the best yet.‘“ (...)
