& Thursday and Friday the patrons
are treated to something out of the ordinary – A Keystone Comedy
in six reels, entitled „Lillie‘s Punctured Romance.“
To attempt to criticize or describe a good film comedy
is like trying to make a person laugh by telling
him about a funny cartoon. In fact, it partakes of tarring
refined gold.
When the hilarity is due to the antics of the players
and the nature of the situations, cold type cannot
make the reader appreciate the picture. This is particularly
true of his masterpiece of the slapstick art.
Keystone pictures have long been famous for their comedy,
which seems always to have a new and delightful
twist. But for any producer to tackle a six-reel humorous
number was daring, to say the least. However,
the temerity of the makers has been amply justified. To use
a common expression, this picture rings the bell.
It is six thousand feet of undiluted joy. There is a „laugh
in every flicker,“ not to mention a scream in about
every third one. If laughing really does put on fat, the population
of the United States will take on several tons in weight
when this picture goes the rounds. At the private showing,
case-hardened reviewers, trained to sigh at ordinary
humor, laughed until the tears streamed down their careworn
faces.
Marie Dressler, who appears in the leading role, says
that never again will she appear in films. She
is hardly to be blamed for their decision, as it must have
taken her months to recover from this, her first,
appearance.
Charles Chaplin, who plays opposite Miss Dressler,
is nearly an equal factor on the laugh-making.
Almost every move he makes is good for a titter, while roars
are heard wherever he really extends himself.
Of almost equal importance is Mabel Normand, who also
has a leading part. There is a large number of
minor parts, all well handled.
Mack Sennett, who wrote and directed the production,
deserve much praise. Not content with humor
alone, he filled the picture with excellent scenes, and saw
to it that the photography was of the best. Briefly,
he has produced the longest and at the same time, one of the best comedies yer seen on the screen.
