& The Rendezvous

„COME on, my dear; we won‘t have many more nights

together before I go to the Front. Where shall

we go? Somewhere where it‘s cool, quiet, and restful.

No, not to a cafe – cakes aren‘t in my line now

I‘ve thrown aside fancy socks and pretty ties, and have

settled down to training. The Cinema, that‘s

a good idea. Hope there‘s something I can tell the other boys

about – something to make them laugh. We all

fight better when we‘re cheerful.  Here‘s the Cinema, and,

thank goodness, they‘ve got a jolly „Snakesville“

Comedy; that‘s ripping.

„We‘ll come again next week and see

what CHARLIE CHAPLIN‘S latest

„ESSANAY“ is like. I hear he is better than ever.

      „Oh! do stop laughing.

„That Indian‘s head takes a lot of beating

as a trade-mark, eh! Mary?“(...)

„Secured the signature of Charles Chaplin”

Editorial content. „Chaplin Signs With Essanay

A moment before locking up the forms Motography was

informed that the Essanay Film Manufacturing

Company of Chicago has secured the signature of Charles

Chaplin, known from coast to coast as ,the funny

man of the films‘, to a contract calling for what is alleged

to be the largest salary ever paid a motion picture

actor. Mr. Chaplin will begin work in the Chicago studios

of the Essanay Company within a week.“
