& „This year has a large inspiration,“ remarked the comedian,
mentally winking at the large remuneration which
is supplying the I. I. „I‘m going to make better pictures than
I did last. I am doing my own scenarios and my own
directing. We‘re are to have a little story, with maybe an idea
in it, not too much, not to teach anything, but some
effect, like in The Bank, for instance. I think Police (to be
released in a few weeks by Essanay) is the best
thing I‘ve ever done.

BY KITTY KELLY
THE Colonial is experiencing flood-tide pressure during
its last cinema week. Yesterday Manager Field
remarked it was the biggest Sunday the theater has had,
laying the credit to the festive farce of Mr. Chaplin‘s
„Police,“ Essanay produced and General Film distributed.
„Police“ is as funny as the advertisements
would strive to make one think it is. It has a shadow of a plot,
a bit of satire, and some characterization, along with
its absurdity and slapstick, and it moves the house to laughter
as ever any Chaplin did.

& Charlie Chaplin, in Essanay‘s „Police,“
arrives today to assist in making the Colonial‘s final week before
it turns on its lights for the „Treasure Island“ play a burst
of glory. That he appears here exclusively for one week will
intensify the effect.

& „Variety“ reviews the Essanay-Chaplin „Police,“ remarking:
„The second Chaplin-Mutual two reeler, „Police“ is not
so funny as the first one for the reason that the finish is too
quiet. Mutual has undoubtedly given a good deal
of attention to Chaplin‘s scenarios, they carrying more or less
pf a „plot,“ etc.“ Anybody‘s toes tingling?
(...) Chicago Tribune, May 30, 1916
& „Police,“ Charlie Chaplin‘s latest feature, has been
released. This is said to be even beyond the
regular Chaplin standard and to come under the head
of a comedy classic. In this picture Chaplin
is a released convict. If there is anything funnier than Charlie‘s
walk it is his run, and this is worked overtime
in „Police,“ as he is constantly dodging these guardians
of the peace.
