But There is an Alarming Trouble – It‘s Just
the Exhibitors Asking General Film for
Re-Bookings of the Chaplin-Essanay Feature With That Title
IF early reports from General Film Company branch
office managers may be taken as a criterion, the Essanay-Chaplin
comedy feature, „Police!“ is going to attract as much,
if not more, attention and awaken greater interest than the
Essanay-Chaplin „Carmen.“ (...)
As an instance of the desire for „Police!“ shown by exhibitors,
the following copy of a telegram message sent by Manager
John P. McCue of the Bijou Theatre, El Paso, Texas, to the General
Film Company branch manager, D. Prince of Dallas, Texas,
is cited:
„We want exclusive use of this film. ... You may book
us for a two days‘ showing and a return date in two
weeks after first showing, you to fix the price for both exhibitions.“

„His burglar friend comes in and with
a free-for-all-fight Chaplin recovers the lady‘s jewels
and returns them to her next day. Then
a policeman whom Chaplin had never done anything to,
except hit on the head while a mallet, chases
him off the steps just when he hoped to win the widow.“
Police is released by Essanay May 27, 1916.
