& CHATTER IN HOLLYWOOD: Reckon Scarlett

O‘Goddard is happy that she has been ordered to New Orleans,

where she will seek to improve her Southern accent

for „Gone With the Wind.“ Now she won‘t have to face Charlie

Chaplin when he returns from Pebble Beach for

he is sure to be surprised, to put it mildly, when he sees

how his one time bachelor home has been turned

into a veritable doll‘s house by Paulette and Sylvia Fairbanks.

& CHATTER IN HOLLYWOOD: Sylvia Fairbanks is far too

clever a woman to remain idle and when I asked

her if it were really true she was in complete charge

of redecorating Charlie Chaplin‘s house, she

said: „Well, isn‘t it about time someone did something with

that house?“ The Fairbanks home at the beach

is so charming and unusual, and if she has as much luck

with Charlie‘s place, I wouldn‘t be surprised to find

her flooded with offers from her Hollywood friends to „re-do“

their places. Another thing – if Sylvia were a movie

star I‘ll wager the fans would copy her fad of not wearing

a hat, even in the daytime.

& Chatter in Hollywood: Paulette Goddard is making another

trip to San Francisco to see Charlie Chaplin. The first

one was highly unsuccessful and he told her if she didn‘t wait

and make a picture with him that everything was over

between them. Paulette has waited for two years for Charlie to

write a screen play for her and she feels an opportunity

to make a picture with David Selznick is too important to be

overlooked. Her new contract is of five years duration.

She says she is not going to any more parties, the night clubs

will see her no no longer and that she is going

to seriously settle down and work hard to do justice

to the Scarlett role

& Charlie Chaplin Visits Salinas –

      Then Disappears

Charlie Chaplin, he of the cane, big shoes and derby,

must like Salinas.

He was here Sunday, registered at the Hotel Cominos

and escaped hordes of autograph seekers who

make things non too quiet for a celebrity who is seeking

just that.

The famous film comedian toured the city during the

afternoon and evening and left with his destination

unannounced. He has been vacationing at Carmel and recently

sent $200 to the Salinas fund for the President Roosevelt

birthday observance program.

& Charlie Chaplin Has House

      On Peninsula

Charlie Chaplin has taken the Monteagle home

at Pebble Beach for several weeks and with his servants

and friends he is enjoying a vacation there.

Driving a custom-built blue sedan, the famous actor

has caused a great deal of excitement throughout

the peninsula with his appearances. No definite announcement

of the guests in the party has been made.

„Completing the script on which he is working

Editorial content. „Hot From Hollywood

      By LOUELLA O. PARSONS

      Motion Picture Editor

      International News Service“ (...)

„According to Catherine Hunter, Charlie Chaplin‘s efficient

publicity head, he will remain in San Francisco another

month completing the script on which he is working. Miss

Hunter says she is very sure he knew nothing about

Paulette Goddard‘s contract with David Selznick until he read

it in the newspapers – all of which, of course,

renews the rumor that Paulette and Charlie have reached

an understanding. Paulette goes to Florida and

Charlie remains here. Meanwhile she is being urged to work

hard to perfect herself for the role of Scarlett O‘Hara

and that certainly is enough to make any girl concentrate.“

Chaplin is working out the script of The Great Dictator

in the ‘Frisco area at Pebble Beach, Carmel.

It‘s Vivien Leigh, not Paulette Goddard, who will be

Scarlett O‘Hara in Gone With the Wind.
