Charlie Chaplin was so sure he would win the Academy award
for the best masculine acting job of the year that he had
prepared his rejection speech all the way down to the final period!
And until the evening of the banquet he was practicing
it on favored friends. The keynote of the speech was, ,How can
anyone decide which member of a picture is the
person responsible for its success?‘ This argument seems
silly, particularly with a Chaplin picture. Anyway he
didn‘t win the award, and – his high-sounding rejection phrases
must await another occasion.“
The Great Dictator: Four nominations. No award.
