& REPORTS already have spread about the plot of „The
Great Dictator.“ It is obviously aimed at Adolf Hitler,
with its setting the tiny nation of Ptomania and Chaplin
in a dual role as the dictator, Bacteria, and as a
Jewish tramp who is thrown into a concentration camp and,
through a set of curious chances, is mistaken for
Bacteria. With his greatness thrust upon him, the tramp
dictator unwittingly conquers several countries but,
in the end, makes an anti-militaristic speech which amazes
and delights his subjects. That, at least, was the
yarn as it stood a week before the play went into production.
Much may be changed before the film finally
emerges, and that, in view of the deliberation with which
he works, may not be before 1940. And then,
if coming events cast true shadows, Chaplin may change
still more.
