& Thirty-five impersonations of Charles Chaplin were
seen at Loew‘s Bijou Theater last night. It was in addition to the
new two-reel feature with Charles Chaplin, entitled
„Work.“ Amateurs were given a chance to show their ability
as movie actors. The crowd that turned out to see
this feature was the largest of the season. The police reserves
were forced to disperse the crowd at 7:30, every seat
in the house being occupied by 7 o‘clock. George M. Schenck,
the manager, says that at 4 o‘clock in the afternoon
the crowds started to pour in, and at 7:30 they had to be
turned away. Plenty of fun was furnished by these
would-be comedians, and while several of the near-Chaplins
had his funny slide, they lacked his facial expressions.
Alexander Grossman, the winner of the first prize, deserved
that honor, and if it were not for his height, he might
be taken for the real Charlie.

Big Crowd Sees Matches.“ (...)
„At the same show Freddie Welsh added
to his rapidly increasing bank account by giving Johnny Lustig
a course of lessons.
One round to a lesson – ten lessons the course. But the
crowd didn‘t like the exhibition, and many uncouth
persons shouted for the boys to fight. They forgot, evidently,
that Welsh is champion of the world. The very idea!
One fan actually demanded that Charley Chaplin be sent
into the ring, It was quite interesting, and than they
whistled soulful waltz songs. Yes, and some of the crowd
walked out before the fifth lesson was over.“
