& Charlie Chaplin as José, and Edna Purviance, the blond

leading woman of the Essanay company, as Carmen,

are the principals of the coming Essanay release, a burlesque

on „Carmen.“ How many reels has not been stated.

The cost of this mammuth production is not given out, nor

will Miss Purviance have her hair dyed to appear

as a brunette, and Charlie has won his point that José should

have a mustache, and there should be no decrease

in the seize of his feet. The Essanay studio lot is dotted with

Spanish settings, and the comedians are wearing

the garb of matadores.

„The subtle points of genuine humor“

Editorial content. „Chaplin to Burlesque ,Carmen‘

Charles Chaplin has nearly completed another Essanay-Chaplin comedy and it will be released shortly. The title

is Charlie Chaplin‘s Burlesque on Carmen, in two acts. Again

Chaplin is found in an entirely new role. There

is less of the slap stick variety of fun and more of the subtle

points of genuine humor.

Mr. Chaplin apparently is able to put over something

new in almost every production. You look for him as he appeared

last and you find that his make-up has disappeared and

a new one donned. But it is the same Chaplin underneath, you

find the same personality that has made beloved all over

the world.

It is largely this element of surprise that makes

his fun of the top notch variety. You expect to see one thing

and you are confronted with an entirely new phase of the

mysterious Chaplin. But the surprise is always pleasing, as the

fun is always there.“
