„Charlie“ and Bride Speed Homeward

      Scene of Comedian‘s Nuptials

Above – The comedy king of films is shown awaiting

transportation from Nogales, Ariz., to Mexico, with

him are his attorney, Nathan Burkan, and Mrs. Rhea McDonald,

who described herself as a „neighbor of Charlie‘s.“

Mrs. McDonald left the party at Nogales to go to a relative‘s

ranch in Mexico. The romantic spot, Empalme, where

Chaplin and Miss Grey were married. The arrow points to the

home of Judge Antonio Haro, who performed the

marriage ceremony.

& INSIDE STUFF

      On Pictures

Charlie Chaplin‘s marriage to Lita Grey, his leading

lady, is looked upon among the picture colony on the coast

as a planned press stunt. (...)

Still it was a surprise to the Hollywood crowd – Chaplin‘s

marriage, although perhaps not to Nathan Burkan,

his New York attorney, who happened to be out there

at that time.

„Born in Cahuenga, near Hollywood, on April 15, 1908“

Editorial content. „DISPUTE RAGES ABOUT AGE

      OF MRS. CHAPLIN

Decision May Send Her To School

While Charlie Chaplin, screen comedian, is performing

his eccentricities before a camera for the world‘s

amusement, the possibility that his newly claimed bride,

Lita Grey Chaplin, will be sitting sedately in a Los

Angeles schoolroom or be turning her attention to books

of learning in the hands of a private tutor presented

itself today in the announcement the girl is but 16 years

of age, and therefore subject to the state‘s school

laws.

The fact that the girl was not 19 years of age, as she

claimed when a marriage license was issued

to the couple at Empalme, Mexico, on October 14 last,

was known yesterday by discovery of a birth

certificate filed with the bureau of vital statistics by Dr. E. O.

Palmer on April 27, 1908. According to the

certificate, the girl, christened Lillian Louisa McMurray,

daughter of Robert McMurray, expert accountant,

and Lillian Curry McMurray, was born in Cahuenga, near

Hollywood, on April 15, 1908.

According to Dr. Palmer, Mrs. McMurray, mother

of the girl, subsequently married twice, the

second husband‘s name being Parker and the third

Spicer.

The Mexican records, it is said, record the date of the

birth of Lita Grey in 1905 instead of 1908.“ (...)
