& When Norma Talmadge‘s picture „Kiki“ has its initial

showing at the Million Dollar, Los Angeles, it will start off on a

regular grind instead of a premiere. It is said that since

Milton Feld left the house no one has been found who can

produce atmospheric prologs for the pictures coming

into the Million Dollar, always known as a prolog house. At the

last minute for the showing of the Chaplin picture,

„The Gold Rush,“ a ballet was obtained from one of the local

schools and a few singers added to it, with no pretense

made to carry atmosphere for the picture. It is said, due to this

type of entertainment, returns at the box office for the

Chaplin run was very disappointing.

& Then came Mae Murray, demanding his services, followed by

Mrs. Rudolph Valentino ordering clothes for „The

Hooded Falcon“ (which clothes are still on the wardrobe

shelves, since Rudolph has not yet made this picture),

and Sid Grauman asking for bizarre creations for the prolog of

„The Gold Rush.“ So striking was Adrian‘s work on

the prolog that the morning after the opening, five studios

made him offers!

(...) Motion Picture, May 1926

& With the Chaplin picture, „The Gold Rush,“ opening

at the Million Dollar this week, there will be no prolog. Guy

Eyssel, house manager, figures that as the „Gold

Rush“ had been shown at Grauman‘s Egypt with a prolog,

it will be impossible for his house to endeavor to

put on a similar one with this picture, so he departed from

the prolog idea and is using feature music as the

picture‘s embellishments.

& Prologue for „Gold Rush“ Los Angeles – „The Northern Lights

Ballet“ is being staged by Ernest Belcher as the

prologue for „The Gold Rush,“ now playing at the Million Dollar.

In the cast are Harvey Karles, Luella Lee and

Sherry Louise Marshall.

(...) Film Daily, May 10, 1926

& Chaplin‘s „Gold Rush,“ at the Million Dollar, proved

a poor pick for second week, and tumbled hard in gross. Had

this picture had a prolog to back it up there is no doubt

that the gross for the first two weeks would have been increased

by at least $8,000. A ballet used for atmosphere did not

seem to satisfy at all.
