Editorial content. „Chaplin Offends Lawyers;
Peace of Haven Menaced
Charlie Chaplin, pie promoter par excellence, one
of the most filmed and famous of picture artists, sought
Salt Lake as as refuge. Now arises the question, has he fund it?
Charlie‘s own declaration on the subject is that
he came to Salt Lake to get away from reporters, lawyers
and similar inquisitive folk who might interrupt him
in the completion of his latest clicking epic.
Enter the doubt as to the ability of one so illustrious
to park himself even in the fastness of Utah‘s
majestic mountains. It appears that Charles in speaking of the
Los Angeles lawyers from whom he fled, did not
mention them in those terms of politeness which the members
of the bar would have all use toward the profession.
A newspaper clipping or similar information found its way
to the hands of the California barristers. And now
comes Benjamin J. Rich, member of the legal firm of Booth,
Lee, Badger & Rich of Salt Lake.
Mr. Rich paid a visit to The Tribune yesterday in quest
of information as to the reporter who first discovered
that Charlie was seeking asylum here, and to whom said
Charles poured forth his lament. It appears, so Mr.
Rich stated, that certain unnamed lawyers, objecting to the
manner in which the comedian had characterized
the profession, intend to bring suit against him for libel,
Charlie being alleged to have them to an untold
degree.
Mr. Rich, making gestures about the majesty of the
profession and the rude manner in which a mere
film actor had treated its members, declared that Charlie‘s
peace in his Salt Lake refuge is going to be
considerably disturbed.“ (...)
