Charlie starts out with a certain idea – often the merest germ
– and works through haltingly until he reaches a striking
point. Then a better idea suggests itself and he starts from his
original point and reconstructs the whole picture. Thus,
for example, The Pawnshop started off along the lines of Easy
Street, but the right theme failed at the time to suggest
itself to Chaplin‘s mind and he temporarily shelved the letter,
proceeding with the former instead.“ (...)
