New Leading Lady

      GIVING up her position in Chicago society to enter the

movies, pretty, petite Virginia Cherrill, 20-year-old

debutante, will be leading lady of Charles Chaplin in his

latest picture, „City Lights.“

20-year-old Chicago girl, who has been chosen by Charlie

Chaplin as  leading lady for his next comedy, „City

Lights.“ Virginia is a blonde, 5 feet 4 inches tall, and has

never been in the movies before. Charlie saw her

at a social function and asked her to take a screen test.

      With the receipt of news from Los Angeles that Virginia

Cherrill, formerly of Chicago and beauty prize winner

here, had signed as leading lady for Charles Chaplin, Mrs.

Sidney C. Cherrill, 7148 Ridgeland avenue,

grandmother of the girl, last night branded as ,absolutely false‘

reports that she would disinherit Virginia if she signed

the contract.

      ,I have read the rumors that I would disinherit Virginia,

if she signed the Chaplin contract,‘ said Mrs. Cherrill.

,I wish to correct that impression. I have no objection to her

playing opposite Chaplin or anyone else.‘

      Mrs. Cherrill is coming to Chicago to visit Elaine

Schwarchild, 5029 Woodlawn avenue it was announced.

Her mother, Mrs. W. B. Cherrill, and she will visit

Mrs. E. A. Wilcox of Carthage, Ill., Virginia‘s other grandmother.

      Coming for Mother.

      Hollywood, Cal., Oct. 17. – (Special.) – Virginia Cherrill,

just chosen as Chaplin‘s leading woman in his current

picture, City Lights, left today for her home in Chicago to bring

her mother to Hollywood. Miss Cherrill‘s mother is Mrs.

  1. W.B. Cherrill. Miss Cherrill, a blue eyed, golden blonde, never

worked either on stage or screen before she was invited

by Chaplin to make a screen test here last week. She had come

to Hollywood to visit a girl cum, Sue Carroll (formerly

Mrs. Evelyn Lederer Keefer of Chicago), and was introduced

to Chaplin by a mutual friend.“
