& YOUTHFUL ACTRESS IN CHAPLIN FILM
„City Lights,“ Charles Chaplin‘s new film vehicle which comes
to the Los Angeles Theater on the 30th inst., is enacted
by an unusually competent cast. Virginia Cherrill, a newcomer,
plays the leading feminine role opposite Chaplin.
The picture holds unusual interest for theater men and
public alike in that it contains no dialogue. Sound
effects are used, however. The opening will be a double gala
occasion in that the picture will be the first to play
at the new Los Angeles Theater.

THE various professions of street cleaner, prizefighter
and companion of a millionaire are adopted by
Charlie Chaplin in his most recent film production, City Lights,
which has its opening with the premiere of the
new Los Angeles Theater on Friday evening, January 30,
in addition to his delineation of the role of the tramp,
which he has made world famous.
Because of the nature of the story in the course of the
events the tramp-hero is forced to undertake several
side lines to earn a livelihood. In several sequences in the white
and spotless uniform of a street cleaner he plods
the street from curb to curb, assisted by his implements
of necessity, gathering up all that is unsightly. Later
in trunks and boxing gloves, he follows the fortunes of fistiana
fistiana
in some of the most hilarious burlesques of the fistic
diversion ever filmed. However, in final sequences of City
Lights the comedian is again revealed in his historic
battered derby, elongated shoes, threadbare coat and baggy
trousers as the mirth-provoking and pathetic tramp.

City Lights is an original story by Chaplin, who besides
being star of the film, is also producer, director and
composer of the musical score. Featuring unique sound
effects and musical synchronization, but absolutely
devoid of dialogue, the film, for the latter reason, is among
the most discussed of the year and has long been
anticipated by motion picture fans.
In the principal feminine role Virginia Cherrill, beautiful
newcomer to the silver sheet, makes her debut
as the blind flower girl, while Harry Myers, screen favorite
of long standing, also has an important place in the
cast as an eccentric millionaire.
Preparations to make the premiere of City Lights one
of the most brilliant openings ever seen here, with
a majority of the famous stage and screen personalities
of Hollywood and other celebrities scheduled to
attend, are now well under way.
Seats go on sale at the box office today.“
