      When City Lights was in production the whole industry

was awaiting its debut with the avowed expectancy

that it would answer the question of talkers vs. silents. Now that

„City Lights“ is here all producing companies emphatically

declare that its reception was never expected to influence their schedules because they knew all along that there is only

one Charlie Chaplin.

& $70,000 WEEK‘S GROSS ESTIMATED FOR „LIGHTS“

      Basing his estimate on box-office figures showing

that „City Lights,“ grossed approximately $30,000 in the first

three days of its run at the Cohan, exclusive

of its $11 opening. Al Lichtman yesterday figured that

the Chaplin picture will take nearly $70,000

in its first seven days. The house is grinding out nine shows

daily. Monday, a rainy day, the silent copped $9,738.

      „Mr. Chaplin, ,Cimarron‘ and The Trader

      Last week was rather an important one on the cinema

social calendar. And few days that brings to the Big

Street such outstanding productions as Cimarron, Trader Horn

and that noted Professor of Laughter, Mr. Chaplin

himself, could hardly be considered as ordinary for even

such a blase thoroughfare as Broadway. Looks

like the boys out Hollywood way have decided to say

it with pictures.“ (...)

      The world premiere of City Lights takes place in Los Angeles

      January 30, 1931 at the Los Angeles Theatre.

      City Lights opens in New York February 6, 1931

      at the Cohan Theatre.

      George M. Cohan Theatre, 1482 Broadway (between
