„Snowy weather ordinarily would have interfered with theatre trade“

Editorial content. „,Lights‘ Can Do

      $57,000 Weekly

      At Cohan

With 1,300 seats and a scale of 50-$1, playing nine

performances daily, the Cohan, New York, with Chaplin‘s City

Lights, can do $57,000 a week. It‘s a surprising gross

to the Broadway showman, who never deemed the former

legit Cohan of a large money capacity.

The silent comedy is playing with but a news reel

and short comedy. Opening early in the morning, the nine-a-day

are secured. Over the week-end and Monday, when

the snowy weather ordinarily would have interfered with

theatre trade, no interruptions happened to the steady

flow toward the Cohan.

House at present is scaled $1 for the mezzanine and

orchestra, with 50c on the upper floor. There is a chance this

may be rescaled to 75c all over price up to 6 and $1 all

over after that hour. The possible re-scaling would increase

the gross possibilities.

The $11 Chaplin opening at the Cohan was not taken

seriously. While some sold at that price, so many courtesy and

press coupons were passed out the actual money return

for the premiere was not important.“

The world premiere of City Lights takes place in Los Angeles

January 30, 1931 at the Los Angeles Theatre.

Los Angeles Theatre, 615 South Broadway (between

6th and 7th Streets), Los Angeles.

City Lights opens in New York February 6, 1931

      at the Cohan Theatre.

George M. Cohan Theatre, 1482 Broadway (between

42nd and 43rd Streets), New York.

City Lights closes at the Cohan Theatre in New York

      April 30, 1931.
