Specials Going Big – Capitol $90,000
Business is bounding this week and in peculiar spots.
The Street currently presents the unusual scene
of the legit houses which have gone film comparatively outrunning
the big grinds. Only current exception to this rule is the
Capitol where Inspiration blasted in on a five-a-day do juxe
show basis to battle snow and rain for a sweeping
week end which will likely send this Garbo film to around
$90,000 on the week. Also Millie at the Mayfair
where it will top $40,000 this week
All theatres had to fight the winter‘s worst snow Saturday
night which went on into Sunday, turned to rain and
never let up throughout Monday. But the weather didn‘t stop
them from continuously lining up outside the Cohan
as well as the Capitol. The Cohan has got Chaplin‘s City Lights
with the Astor and Globe, respectively displaying
Trader Horn and Cimarron, very much in the present
smash class.“ (...)
„Chaplin is away to a tremendous start at the Cohan
which is doing nine shows a day and charging $1
for the orchestra and first balcony with 50c in its gallery.
House has been doing just short of $10,000 a day.
Not counting the Friday night (6) $11 premiere, much of which
was the usual courtesy give-away, picture is sure to run
around $57,000 on its first full week, a figure which few theatre
men believed the house could hold at its capacity (1,395)
and scale. There has been a steady b. o. line since the feature
started to grind early Saturday morning with this schedule
only changed for Sunday when the house didn‘t open for business
until afternoon, thereby cutting down the total number
of performances.“ (...)
„Estimates for This Week“ (..)
