„Pace is tremendous“

Editorial content. „Big Money Pictures Ready to

      Swing Over Country on Release;

B‘way Houses in Very Fair Shape

Broadway houses will swing into Lent this week

in very fair shape. Figures around the country wouldn‘t took

so good if compared to the national film gait of about

a year ago this time, but there is no question of the improved

tone over the past few months. There is a vein

of optimism among the theatre boys.

On the New York end it is also figured that with such

pictures as Cimarron, Chaplin‘s City Lights and Trader Horn

sweeping across the states there will be three

substantial reasons for calling the public‘s attention to the

film theatre as amusement source.

Nothing seems capable at present of interfering

with this trio of films. All are standing up on the street. With

Chaplin, who pulled $66,500 into the Cohan on his

first week, there is every evidence of another $60,000 to

$65,000 this week. Pace is tremendous and even

beyond what the United Artists group thought it could do at that

house. No abatement in attendance, either at the Globe

and Astor, where Cim and Horn respectively got $20,600 and

$21,300 last week, capacity, or a bit more, in each

instance.

Of the local holdovers Inspiration currently hints at a $65,000

second Capitol week plus an outside chance of sticking

a third if getting a Tuesday-Wednesday (18) spurt, but that‘s

doubtful. Millie, at the Mayfair, will linger three weeks,

having tossed off a $41,400 opening stanza, and indicating

$39,000 this week. The Garbo film ran up a tremendous

figure for the Capitol last week in plunging through three tough

weather opening days to $94,100. This gives the Swedish

girl two pictures well into the 90‘s at this house, besides another

week there for the record $109,000.“ (...)

      „Estimates for This Week“ (...)

      „Cohan (1,395; 50-$1) – City Lights (Chaplin-UA)

(2d week) Comedy draw terrific and shows no such fluctuation

as in Los Angeles; $66,500 last week, not counting $11

premiere, and probably $60,000 or bit better this week; pace

amazing legit men familiar with the theatre and more

than expected by film‘s home office.“ (...)

The world premiere of City Lights takes place in Los Angeles

January 30, 1931 at the Los Angeles Theatre.

Los Angeles Theatre, 615 South Broadway (between

6th and 7th Streets), Los Angeles.

City Lights opens in New York February 6, 1931

      at the Cohan Theatre.

George M. Cohan Theatre, 1482 Broadway (between

42nd and 43rd Streets), New York.
