Exhibitor Protests Are Cause, Says Joseph Schenck.
Negotiations for the distribution merger between United
Artists and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer are off. They came
to an end on Tuesday, December 1, with the issuance of the
following statement in Hollywood by Joseph M. Schenck,
Chairman of the United Artists Board of Directors:
,Merger permanently abandoned by mutual consent,
due to protests from exhibitors and not from any
individuals represented in deal.‘“ (...)
„It is also understood that it was Charles Chaplin‘s
refusal to ,go along‘ finally which sealed the fate of the merger.“ (...)
Following is the text of the telegram sent by
Mr. Chaplin to Messrs. Cohen and O‘Reilly, dated Hollywood,
November 20:
,Gentlemen: In reply to your telegram of recent date
I wish to state that the proposed cooperation of the United
Artists with the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Company has
by no means materialized. It is merely a plan.‘“ (...)
