& Just a shack, but it‘s the home of Charlie Chaplin. Chaplin‘s
estate in Beverly Hills adjoins „Pickfair.“ The oddly
shaped stretch of lawn is a miniature golf course which leads down
to the inevitable swimming pool and bath-house.
Hey, Charlie! Two fellows are walking on your grass!

& Mr. de Mille continued: „A special first award for writing,
directing, and producing ,The Circus‘ goes to Charles
Chaplin. I think he is the only one to whom the Academy has
or ever will give a first award to one man for writing,
directing, acting and producing a picture. It takes us back
to the old days. Mr. Chaplin is not here, due to cold
feet but he has wired his high appreciation of the honor.

& The affair was a dinner, with speeches. The victorious
stars were tendered symbolic gold statues, and
the honorable mentionees were presented with diplomas.
Neither Jannings, Chaplin, Barthelness, nor
Swanson were present, but Miss Gaynor received a big
tribute. She was also kidded by the master of
ceremonies, William C. DeMille, for not being a member
of the Academy, but he did not suggest joining.
Prizes of the Academy are awarded both to members
and non-members of the organization, the
membership being officially limited to those who have
registered some distinctive achievement.
William DeMille also took occasion to comment
on Chaplin‘s non-appearance at the affair.
„Mr. Chaplin is absent for a variety of reasons, I understand,“
he said, „most of which are probably cold feed.“
This was greeted with general laughter.
